Peanut Butter and Tomatoes?!?!?

About 9 months ago while talking to a friends she mentioned having peanut butter on toast with tomato for breakfast.  My first reaction was “what?!?!? that sounds disgusting”, but of course my curiosity was peaked and I found myself walking out of the store with a fresh tomato.  The very next morning for breakfast I tried it for myself.  To be honest, it was weird and I wasn’t sure what to make of it.  I had pretty much convinced myself that she was simply pulling my leg to see if I would try it.

So, of course the next logical step was to visit my good friend Google and see what they said.  Well, it turns out that plenty of people had posted about the deliciousness of this combination.  Some of the entries mentioned sprinkling cracked black pepper on top too.  Again, just one more layer of oddness in my book.  But, the very next morning I was cutting up the tomato, spreading the peanut butter on the toast, and of course, cracking some black pepper on top.  It certainly added a new dimension to the flavor, but it hadn’t necessarily made it better or worse.

I still wasn’t quite convinced that I liked it, but for some reason I kept wanting to try it again and again.  It was almost if I was trying to solve some riddle.  And the next thing I knew I was eating it for breakfast almost daily.  I was hooked!  I was literally craving this breakfast.  About a month later I had removed gluten from my diet, so the breakfast options changed.  I was no longer having toast as I hadn’t yet found a gluten free bread option that I had liked and so my peanut butter, tomato, and toast option became a distant memory.

This is until it came up in conversation and I started craving it again.  So, instead of using toast I simply spread the peanut butter directly on the tomato, which in all honesty is kind of a pain in the rear (just ask my hubs who has been doing it for me since I hurt my wrist…lol).  I still haven’t figured out if I really like the combination, or if I am still trying to solve the mystery of why anyone would eat this odd combination.  I suppose it is not too far off from apples and peanut butter in regards to the fact that they both are fruits, but of course the tomato’s sugar content is a whole lot lower!  I am also still in the mindset that the tomato is a vegetable because that’s what we were taught in grade school.  On a side note, did you know that the tomato is not the only food which is botanically a fruit, but cooked as a vegetable?  It’s true!  Eggplants, squash, cucumber, pumpkins, zucchini, and green beans are all botanically fruits!  Wrap your head around that one 😉

Have you ever tried this unique food combination???  If so, I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Yes, yes and yes. I’m so glad you’ve given it a fair shot! I mentioned this to someone the other day, met with same reaction of utter horror but it’s a ‘Don’t knock it, til you try it’ sort of thing. My dad introduced it to us kids and back then, I didn’t like peanut butter but loved this combo on toast. The juicy tomato lends a sweetness and moisture to a classic PB toast. Also, prevents the stick-to-the-roof-of-your-mouth situation.

Ha ha. Love this! Yes, no peanut butter stuck to the roof of your mouth when there’s a juicy tomato to block it! It sounds so odd, but it is soooo good!

My grandpa used to make peanut butter tomato toast , and as a child I hated it. Now I have it almost every morning, and especially now that I’m pregnant I crave it all the time.
